Bloggin' Babes

A couple of months ago, about a hundred women contacted the News & Observer in response to a request for local Moms to be featured bloggers on their soon-to-be-launched Mom2Mom site. After reading hundreds of writing samples, Sarah (far right) and her colleagues selected this group of glamor girls. Amazing how seven women can possess superb wit, wisdom and writing ability, AND look fabulous look incredibly fabulous for a random Tuesday lunch.
My theory is that bloggers, on the whole, are not exactly shy and retiring. Yesterday's lunch with the bloggers confirmed my suspicion. I arrived unfashionably early, as is my habit, and got a prime seat in the middle facing the door (it's a Godfather thing.) I chatted with Sarah and Teresa from the N&O until the other women started trickling in. As each woman sat down, introductions were made and the volume increased until we had a table of 10 with a minimum of three conversations going at once.
Have you ever taken your child to the playground and watched in amazement as the children began playing with one another unabashedly becoming insta-friends over the universal common ground of sand castles and swingsets? That's what we were like yesterday. Within minutes, an unnamed few were lamenting in-laws, others were admitting reversing doorknobs to keep wandering toddlers in their rooms at night and one became my insta-new-best-friend when she admitted that her car served as an overgrown purse with the detritus of life littering its floor.
The conversations included blogging techniques, babysitters, colleges (we had a Gator and a Seminole at the table...but they were both very civilized to one another), books, current events and Beta fish (one received as a favor at a birthday party for 5 year olds, one almost lost in a garbage disposal and several consumed by a cat leaving the fish-sitter carefully selecting identical replacements at the pet store.) And finally in the funny-but-true category...here we were, women brought together simply by the shared experience of motherhood, bound by our children's very existence...and the only time I whipped out my iPhone to show pictures, they were pictures of my dog!!!
Left to right: Natalie, Leigh, Gigi, Di, Beth, Ilyse, Amy, Sarah. Bonnie left earlier apparently to return to her real job!
