It is almost time to leave for North Carolina for the summer, so this week it is appropriately:
13 Things I Will Do In NC This Summer that I Don't Generally Do in Boca
1. Answer to "Miss Diane"...Boca is more of a first-name basis kind of place, but in NC, parents are still referred to as "Miss" or "Mr." followed by the first name. And "Sir" and "Ma'am" are in common usage.
2. Golf, golf and more golf...Golf is more of a social than an athletic or competitive (OK, maybe a little competitive) thing for me, and since none of my friends in Boca golf and we don't live on a golf course here, I don't generally golf during the winter. But within a couple of days in NC, my life will be consumed with where my next round of golf is coming from.
3. Go days and days without driving my car...once the house is stocked with food and drink, there is simply no reason to get in the car. Everywhere I want to go can be reached by walking, biking or golf cart.
4. Get back with my book group...I just haven't found one in Boca and haven't had the time or inclination to start one up.
5. Go to Quail Ridge Books...I love browsing at Borders or Barnes & Noble, but there is nothing like an amazing independent bookstore staffed with knowledgeable readers to take a reader to ecstasy!
6. Party in someone's garage...the social center of our neighborhood is often John & Sharis's garage...you can't really get it until you experience it.
7. Have several days in a row where one of my children is sleeping over somewhere followed by a night of several kids sleeping at my house...summer just seems to be a constant parade of "sleeping around" in the most innocent of ways!
8. Have a DH (designated husband)...since my husband won't be there all the time and I can't bear to miss Couples Golf on Friday nights, I'll be certain to pick up the stray unattached man to accompany me.
9. Eat tomato sandwiches every single day that I have fresh tomatoes...which is almost every single day between my friend Shirley's organic garden and my handyman Leon's wonderful tomato crop!
10. Not wince when I hear a car horn...because in NC it will mean that a friend is driving by and waving at me instead of that someone in Boca is expressing their frustration vehicularly!
11. Go several weeks without Starbucks!...there just isn't a Starbucks in Fuquay Varina...but there's a drive-thru coffee place in the parking lot of the Wal-Mart called Leapin' Lizards that gives Starbucks a run for its money!
12. Go make-up-less for days at a time...you get up, go to the pool, go golf, take a shower, party in John & Sharis's garage and somehow do it all au naturel!
13. Read and relax...this has been a roller-coaster of a year...and one I've been proud of based on where I was a year ago today. But I am ready for some serious chilling out and NC is sure the place to do it!
Y'all come visit anytime now, y'hear?
