My husband is a marathoner. Anyone who has had a child remembers that feeling during the week after giving birth when you stop suddenly in mid-thought and it occurs to you, "I am a mother!" Well, I can imagine that this is how my husband is feeling after completing the Rock & Roll Marathon in San Diego last Sunday...because every few minutes (or so it seems), he says something like, "I am a marathoner!" or "Come on, give me a break...I just completed a marathon!" When I wrote about the experience last week I promised pictures and here they are!
Click here to see the "official" picture of him crossing the finish line...the sports photography company of course cleverly made it so you can't copy the picture, you can only get it by spending an insane amount of money to get digital copies or prints. His Finish Line time was 5:24:33 and his chip time was 5:20:41. Runners have their own lexicon, so now I know what chip time is and, I kid you not, what fartlek means!

Here is Hurley at mile 7. The kids and I took a cab from the hotel to this location to hold up our sign, hand off Daddy's iPod shuffle and give him his sunglasses (which were a necessity about an hour later). On the left of the photo is Ashley, a running friend of Hurley's from Boca. His wife is a coach for Team-in-Training which was a huge purple presence in the marathon.
Mile 7 was conveniently located near a Starbucks, so Haley and I had to take the photo op. In Haley's left hand is one of the blow-up clappers they gave us to make noise cheering on the runners. The other one flew out of her hand and went skittering across the street as about 50 runners went past, leaving me cringing in fear that someone would trip on it!
It was the Rock & Roll Marathon, so of course, Elvis (and a few of his impersonators) ran.
Our hero just moments after crossing the finish line!
Haley and Rory hugging their triumphant Dad. Haley plugging her nose because in addition to being triumphant, his aura was somewhat pungent.
This is the equivalent of the "just after birth" picture of Mom and Dad holding the baby. Hurley's finisher medal.
We think that our customized Life is Good hats had a lot to do with Hurley completing the marathon! Notice that Hurley is wearing a Life is Good Good-Tech Fitness Tee...which is a great running shirt! It is good for all kinds of reasons of which you don't really want to know the details...like chafing, moisture "wicking" (nothing to do with candles) and Body Glide.
The next day while I napped and nursed my scorched back and shoulders (who would have thought to put sunscreen on at 7 a.m. when it was foggy and cool?), Hurley took the kids to Beverly Hills where they took this picture to let me know they were thinking of me!
And for those who thought Hurley doing a marathon was the unlikeliest thing to happen this year...here is a picture of Rory and Haley hugging and smiling! Strange but true!!!
Congratulations to Hurley...I am so proud. I know that everyone who knows him (including me) had their doubts when he announced his intentions four months ago. He proved that with a goal and a plan, he can do anything!
