There's nothing like Laurie Notaro to provide fun, mentally non-challenging reading when you are feeling like you are wallowing in an undending reading slump. The Idiot Girls' Action-Adventure Club is the fourth Laurie Notaro book that I've read and each has delivered rollicking stories of a woman who never quite feels like she is an adult. This books is subtitled: True Tales for a Magnificent and Clumsy Life. Magnificent and Clumsy...yes, these two adjectives can peacefully co-exist in the real world, just not in the world of perfection to which we aspire and which we assume everyone else is leading.
Laurie Notaro is unafraid to share the most embarrassing information...her mother's addiction to QVC, dumpster "shopping", unspeakable results of too much drinking or being legs-up at the gynecologist's office. With each vignette, I feel more closely acquainted with her and a strong desire to be at the bar with her the next time she's tying one on. She's kind of like the friend who, no matter how badly you behave, always behaves worse!
I think that all women of a certain age...that is, any age past the time when they actually believe that they are perfect...should have a collection of Laurie Notaro's books on their shelves. They can help you feel sane when you are surrounded by chaos. They can make you feel quite accomplished when you are feeling like you haven't finished a sentence in a week, let alone a book!
