I love writing. I love to type. I love to read. I guess it all boils down to the fact that I love to communicate. I pride myself on my boxes of lovely notecards (Quail Ridge Books has a great selection) and my ability to write an enthusiastic thank you note, a heartfelt note of condolence and occasionally a sincere apology.
I can still feel the shudder of delight when I looked in my old-fashioned glass front mailbox in college and saw an envelope covered with stickers knowing that there would be a letter from Gramma, maybe a little poem and sometimes $5 for extra spending money. I fondly remember the excitement of a thick envelope in my post-college bill-filled mailbox, unique in its lack of upper case letters, and savoring with anticipation a letter from amy.
Is the art of the handwritten note lost? Is there anyone who wouldn't love to see a brightly colored envelope tucked in with the bills and sales flyers every now and then? If you opened that envelope and found a familiar scrawl saying anything and maybe even a real printed-on-Kodak-paper photograph, would you EVER say, "Gee, I wish he/she had just e-mailed this?" Of course not.
So, it is with full awareness of the infinitessimal impact on the world through this blog that I propose we aspire to put one tiny "to-do" on Sunday and that is to write a handwritten note to someone for no reason. It doesn't have to be on fancy notepaper. It could be written on the back of a child's drawing. It could be scratched on a sticky note attached to an article you wanted to share. It's your Snail Mail Sunday!
It could be sent to someone you see every day...maybe even hand-delivered to the barista who knows your coffee drink each morning before you can form syllables. It could be sent to someone you haven't seen in ages. It could be sent to someone you don't know...a letter to an author whose book you enjoyed.
This is the card that I am going to mail this week. I think I'm going to send it to my friend Laura because she'll know that's Olivia on top of the car along with her dolce campana and we'll never know for sure which one she would rescue first! And by the time she gets around to reading my blog (she has a TODDLER you know!) she will have already received it.
It's hard to make it readable on the blog, but the cover says:
...and then it clicks in - the baby AND the coffee are on top of the car...(oops...)
I haven't decided what sentiment I am going to share inside the card, but I will probably spend an inordinate amount of time on the internet trying to find a suitable quote from someone impressive to illustrate how much I value her friendship even though she sometimes has to blow me off because she has a TODDLER, you know!
So my friends in the blog world...indulge me here...let me know what you think. Post it on your blog if you want and I'll let Mr. Linky do his thing to send people your way. But above all, put pen to paper and stamp to envelope and make someone's week! (And comment here about it...always comment...that's a given...I live for comments!)
