I was thrilled the other day when, soon after I posted my review of The Demon Under the Microscope, I got an e-mail from the author!
One of my search engines turned up your review of The Demon Under the Microscope. I am very happy that you liked the book! I do a lot of radio interviews and talks in which it's clear that the interviewer hasn't read the book at all -- which makes informed comments like yours even more welcome.
All the best,
Tom Hager
After I e-mailed him back asking if I could post his e-mail here, he sent the following:
I am now working on another science history for the same publisher, this one describing a discovery that is directly responsible for keeping alive 2 billion people today (and it's not a medical discovery). Care to take a guess?
My first guesss was Merlot, but I think 2 billion would probably be on the low side for that. So, my bleaders...what do you think? Anyone have an answer? I've been thinking about this since yesterday and haven't come up with anything. How about a free copy (courtesy of Di) of The Demon Under the Microscope to whoever comes up with the right answer?
If you are interested in more information on this wonderful author who was kind enough to contact me and make me feel like my blog is really important, please visit his website.

Okay, I admit, it is driving me crazy! Your guess of Merlot is not so unlikely considering the health benefits. I have also thought Viagra...but that IS a medical discovery and does not keep people alive. (Although it may be responsible for many births.) When I repeated the real life riddle to Taylor, her first guess was trees! Not a bad guess! Hmmm, I am guessing something having to do with science, well-being and love. Either marriage (well, for men at least) or owning a pet. Trite, I know, but I have heard/read that it is true.

My first thought was the industralization of agriculture and factory farming of animals

Electricity? (My first guess was central heating/air, but that word "discovery" led me to my guess...)

Chocolate, of course. *grin*
