The other night Haley and I went to Bed, Bath & Beyond to get new sheets and stuff. Over the past week, I got two coupons, one for 20% off one item at BB&B and one for 20% off your whole order at Linens 'n' Things. But each coupon indicated that they would honor their competitors' coupons. So BB&B being my preferred store, not to mention closer than L'n'T, off I went on my merry shopping way (and shopping is not usually a merry activity for me).
As we were checking out, the lady behind me commented that she didn't know you could use the other coupon at this store. Since I was using my L'n'T coupon, I offered her my BB&B coupon, but she already had one. So I offered it to the person behind her who also had one. Behind her was a clueless guy (is there any other kind?) and of course he didn't have a coupon, so I gave my BB&B coupon to him. I saved $100...so you do the math...of course Hurley's comment was, "That always makes me nervous when you say you saved $100...how much did you spend?" Oops, sorry cell phone dropped the signal again.
As we were walking out to the car, the lady who was behind me was walking in the parking lot and came up to me and said, "Are you from the midwest?" I said, "No, I'm from upstate New York." She looked somewhat perplexed. I said, "You're asking that because I was nice, right?" She said, "Wow, you read minds too!"
So, in a town where people will honk loudly at you for daring to let someone pull out ahead of you in traffic and old people tell other old people to "Go to Hell" in the grocery store if their cart gets in the way, I am determined to make a difference, to be nice, to make people smile in spite of themselves, to do at least one Random Act of Kindness each day and to dare, DARE people to be unpleasant. You don't have to be from the midwest to be nice...and just think how much of a difference you can make in someone's day just by doing something so little!
